about

Written in the spring of 2020, “Falling Berceuse” evokes the listlessness of the early days of the COVID-19 lockdown. Its floating and repetitive, yet ever-changing musical motives are periodically interrupted with loud bursts of sound, reminiscent of an unquiet mind, one which is nevertheless eventually lured to sleep by the end of the piece. While Nico Muhly originally composed the work for piano, Chelsea Lane, in collaboration with Muhly, edited “Falling Berceuse” for harp. “I find that the harp adds a dreamlike soundscape to the piece,” Lane says. “The harp’s low strings bring out the richness of the large, unbroken chords, and the bell-like upper register effects a haunting, ethereal melody.”
